Where on the coast to catch sea trout?

There are naturally many different types of coasts with their own hotspots and therefore many different situations to describe. Nevertheless a little contribution where on the coast the largest amount of the fish are catched. After many years on the coast is it clear for me that fishes are catched near the structure and definitely often on low water. It means that the most fish hook in a short distance, i.e less than one fly cast from the angler.

There are of course exceptions. In some places on Stevns you angle over big chalk spots and here we experience that fishes can hook long away in a cast. There are other examples too. I.e there is one spot on North Funen, where I on several occasions catched fish long away on a long cast with 24 g blink. On average  2 of 3 times I had contact long out on a cast when I was fishing near two rosehip bushes .  After some years I was fishing from the boat near the same place and I saw 4 - 5 stones (2-3 m each), that was the reason for many fish long away on the cast precisely in this place. In Sweden there are many such small skerries, which can hold fishes.  But often there are many other structures if you are moving along the coast so it is not important, if you can not cast to the visible reef. The third place, where it is necessary to cast long, are big waterholes. In rare cases fish can move to the waterhole defining sandbanks  backside and it can be relevant to cast long.

But mostly fish go tight to the coast also in pools.

Thinking about this we experience that fish go tight to the coast and very tight to the coast. We experience that  deeper than to the knees wading is giving significantly fewer fish. Many times we waded deeper, until the hips, and it was clear that the one who learned not to wade deep catched the most fish. I want not to wade deeper than to my knees when I am fishing with a fly and with a spinning rod it is more effective on the most Danish coasts to stay on the land.  This is the same when fishing near a reef. This can be done with a spinning rod from the land, eventually in maximum 20-30 cm water. Also when I am fishing near a reef I do not wade on it.  The reason is that I seldom catch something in deep water and not going on the reef, I can come back and try the same place again later (without scaring fish). At the same time I spare a lot of time, which can be used more effectively in other places on the coast.

Also when I wade not deep I am fishing with the spinning rod often with a cast at an angle 30 - 40 degree angle to the coast. The blink is fishing relatively parallel to the coast and never perpendicular to the coast. The same is with the fly rod, alternatively a perpendicular cast to the coast is replaced with a parallel cast to the coast before you eventually wade on the reef. Also if wading up to 50 cm water.

With a cast along the coast it can be a good idea to limit the cast length. It is difficult to hook fish on a long distance (specially with the fly rod). So the mantra is. Limit the cast length with spinning rod, wade preferably not and always in low water and at least consider to fish along the coast.

The exceptions from the mentioned above are naturally big low water areas , for example low water fjords. Anglers can stand here in many places and it can be relevant to wade large areas while searching 360 degrees around you.

A fine fish around 60 cm is released. It hooked 2 meters from the waves crack in the background. It is about 0,5 m deep.A fine fish around 60 cm is released. It hooked 2 meters from the waves crack in the background. It is about 0,5 m deep.
